Race to DakarOver View:
In 2006, Charley Boorman competed in the Dakar Rally, arguably the toughest motorcycle race in the world.
The race originated in 1978, a year after racer Thierry Sabine got lost in the desert and decided it would be
a good location for a regular rally. Originally, the rally was from Paris, France to Dakar, Senegal,
interrupted by a transfer across the Mediterranean. However, due to politics and other factors,
the course - including its origin and destination - has been varied over the years.
The 2006 Dakar Rally started in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Dakar Rally is organised by ASO who run many spectacular events including the Tour de France.
We were privileged to have had the opportunity of working closely with ASO who were exceptionally supportive
of the 'Race to Dakar' project.
Charley's experience has been captured in a TV series, DVD and book. This unique media project looks into all
aspects of competing in the Dakar including the groundwork for the race through to the bike preparation,
physical training, a practise rally raid and logistics.
The media package also focuses on the highlights of Charley's attempt at the Dakar.
This provides a story that has never been told before, one that stresses how difficult this adventure is on a
personal level and not specifically on which position he finishes in.
This 'lifestyle' approach to the documentary and the fact Charley is a newcomer just as determined as the other
competitors, gives an alternative take on the Dakar, from the privateer angle,
as opposed to the majority of sports coverage which focuses on race results.
Route Map:
PORTUGAL
This year Portugal will be the 24th country the Dakar crosses. The location of Portugal -
a link between Europe and Africa - makes it a natural choice of host for the Dakar start line.
Beginning in Lisbon, the route through Portugal has enough challenges to make sure the rally is testing time
for the competitors from day one.
MOROCCO - MAURITANIA
This stage of the rally initiates the competitors into the strong African heat.
Morocco gives the riders a taste of all the different types of terrain they will face throughout the rally.
The Moroccan desert will push the endurance of the teams as they attempt to combat the scheduled specials.
Mauritania will also throw obstacles of its own at the teams as they try to directly cross through there.
MALI - GUINEA - SENEGAL
Entering Black Africa despite having combated the sand the participants now have new challenges ahead as
they try to overcome navigational difficulties brought about by the numerous changes in direction.
Guinea will add varied landscape to the Rally as competitors will go through areas of dense vegetation and
attempt to cross the numerous fords on the route.
DAKAR
With the feeling of accomplishment mounting as competitors enter Dakar they are treated to a vibrant
illustration of Teranga. The final stage of Lac will lead to eventual triumph for all racers at having
succeeded in completing the infamous Dakar Rally.
